NEWARK, N.J. (September 1, 2017) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team cruised to a 5-0 victory over visiting Mount Saint Vincent at Alumni Field in both teams' season opener. The Scarlet Raiders were led by junior forward
Juliana Ceballos and senior midfielder
Nicole Gomez who each netted a pair of goals while Gomez added an assist during a dominating performance.
R-N improves to 1-0 while the Dolphins go to 0-1.
Rutgers-Newark controlled the tempo of the match from the opening whistle, maintaining possession and largely keeping the ball in the visitor's half. Just under 20 minutes into the first half, the Scarlet Raider efforts produced a tally as a throw-in deep in the attacking third fell to rookie midfielder
Ana Lucia Silveira. Silveira played a square pass over towards Ceballos at the top of the 18 who hit a one-time strike that found the back of the net.
Ceballos' strike would be the only score of the opening period as the Scarlet Raiders headed into the break with an 8-4 advantage in shots, leading 1-0.
R-N would come out firing in the second half, doubling its lead less than three minutes into the stanza. Gomez beat her defender down the right wing and played a ball into the box. Senior forward
Sabrina Solorzano took advantage of the dangerous cross, bringing it under control and beating the keeper with the outside of her right foot.
Less than two minutes later, an errant clearance by Mount Saint Vincent was intercepted by Gomez. She took a quick glance up and, realizing the keeper was off her line, lofted a shot over the goalie and into the open net to extend the home side's advantage to 3-0.
In the 68th minute, Gomez would bag her brace as sophomore back
Deirdre Mackin raced down the left flank and sent in a cross. Gomez won the ball in the scrum and made it 4-0 when she poked it past the netminder.
Finally, in the 76th minute, the Scarlet Raiders closed out their scoring when rookie forward
Melanie Egas played a ball on the ground from the right wing that found the feet of Ceballos. Ceballos made no mistake in front of net, adding her second of the game and capping the evening's tally at 5-0.
Rutgers-Newark held a 20-7 advantage in shots and 13-5 edge in shots on target while also taking six corners to one for Mount Saint Vincent.
Gomez led the home team with five points on two goals and an assist while Ceballos added a pair of scores. Solorzano netted one marker while Silveira and Egas each had their first collegiate assist.
The Scarlet Raiders senior netminder
Diana Carvalho earned the win while making two saves and rookie
Jasmin Erichsen had three in the first 20 minutes of her collegiate career for a combined shutout. The Dolphins' senior keeper Elizabeth Martin made a game-high eight stops.
Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Sunday when it hosts SUNY Cortland at 1 p.m. on Alumni Field.
