Women’s Soccer Routs Neumann for 4th-Straight Road Win

ASTON, Pa. (September 13, 2017) – Senior forward Haley Savva scored twice to help lift the Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team to a 5-0 win at Neumann University Wednesday night. The triumph is the fourth in a row for the Scarlet Raiders with all four coming on the road.

Rutgers-Newark improves to 5-1-0 on the 2017 season and will close out its five-game road trip at Rutgers University-Camden Saturday afternoon in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opener for both schools. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. Neumann drops to 1-2-0 with the loss.

During its four-match streak, Rutgers-Newark has outscored the opposition 12-2, tallying two shutouts and two overtime victories.

Savva staked the Scarlet Raiders to an early lead with her fourth goal of the season, cleaning up a rebound on a shot from senior Sabrina Solorzano. Solorzano earned her second assist of the season, taking the original shot on the play, and R-N never looked back in what was a dominating performance.

Rutgers-Newark completely controlled the first half in terms of possession and field position, holding a 17-3 edge in shots, a 6-3 margin in shots on goal and a 6-0 advantage in corners.

The hosts would take the first two shots of the game, but the Scarlet Raiders would take the next two, the second being Savva's goal.

After the marker, Newark continued to press, taking 15 of the next 16 shots to close the half. All three Neumann attempts were on target, but Scarlet Raider sophomore goalkeeper Heidi Paulson was up to the task, making three saves in the opening 45 minutes.

Rutgers-Newark scored two goals less than five minutes into the second half. The first came at 46:59 from senior Nicole Gomez and the second came at 49:24 from Solorzano. The Gomez score was her fourth of the season, and junior Juliana Ceballos was credited with her fourth assist on the play. Solorzano registered her fourth, chipping a shot up and in over Neumann goalkeeper Kim Montgomery.

Savva's brace came at 74:24, and 9:50 later, Iné Collins recorded the first goal of her Scarlet Raider career after a corner kick from Ceballos. The assist was the second of the night for Ceballos, while the points were the first for Collins.

Rutgers-Newark finished the match with a dominating stat line, leading 11-0 in corners, 37-5 in shots and a 16-4 in shots on goal. Paulson and freshman Jasmin Erichsen combined for the shutout as Paulson made three saves in 58 minutes, and Erichsen made one in her 32 minutes. Paulson was credited with the win.

A team that struggled to find the back of the net in 2016, the Scarlet Raiders have averaged three goals per game in 2017. A very balanced team so far, Rutgers-Newark has four different players with at least four goals and five players with at least two points.
