JERSEY CITY, N.J. (January 17, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's basketball team rolled to a 73-10 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) road win at New Jersey City University Wednesday night in the John J. Moore Athletic Center.
The win snaps a four-game skid for the Scarlet Raiders who improve to 2-8 in league play and 7-10 overall. Rutgers-Newark will look for a second-straight NJAC victory against Montclair State University Saturday night in The Golden Dome. NJCU drops to 0-12 overall and 0-9 in the conference.
The Scarlet Raiders were in control from the opening tip, shooting 52.9 percent in the first half and taking an incredible 49-2 lead after 20 minutes of basketball. Junior

A layup from
Faith Ashby 3:34 into the game handed Newark a 15-0 lead, and the Rutgers-Newark defense kept the hosts off the scoreboard for the first 6:46 of gametime.
After the first NJCU basket of the game, the Scarlet Raiders continued to roll, closing the first half on a 25-0 run. Seven players had four points or more in the first half, and
Faith Ashby led Rutgers-Newark with five steals and four assists to go with her 12 points in just 10 minutes of action.
Rutgers-Newark slowed the pace in the second, but the guests continued to roll, allowing just two points over the final 13:08 of action.

Nikki Sammartino had an excellent game for the Scarlet Raiders, posting a 14-point, 15-rebound double-double. Senior forward
Nicole Skelly had eight points, a career-high 16 rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots, and
Faith Ashby had 14 points (6-for-6), six assists and five steals in just 16 minutes.
Hannah Ashby notched 13 points and five rebounds, with rookie guard
Ania Harrell pocketing eight points and eight rebounds. Sophomore center
Comfort Akinbo finished with eight points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots in a solid all-around performance as well, and junior guard
Chelsea Scott totaled six points, six rebounds and two helpers.
The Scarlet Raiders were scorching hot from the field, shooting 56.1 percent for the game. R-N converted at a 72.2 percent clip in the first quarter, held a 65-16 rebounding advantage, scored 58 points the paint and 18 via the fastbreak.
Every player that saw the court for Rutgers-Newark scored at least one point, while six different Scarlet Raiders tallied eight points or more.
