CAMDEN, N.J. (January 27, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's basketball team dropped a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) contest at Rutgers University-Camden by a score of 60-52 Saturday afternoon.
Rutgers-Newark falls to 2-11 in the NJAC and 7-13 overall, while Rutgers-Camden improves to 11-8 overall and 8-5 in league play. The Scarlet Raiders return to Newark Wednesday night for an NJAC matchup against Ramapo College. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. and fans unable to get to The Golden Dome can watch live at

Junior guard
Faith Ashby finished with 19 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two assists, and freshman guard
Ania Harrell posted her fourth double-double of the season with 10 points, 12 rebounds and two assists. Senior forward
Nicole Skelly had 13 points and five boards, while sophomore center
Comfort Akinbo added four points, four rebounds and four blocked shots. Sophomore guard
Hannah Ashby had three points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Rutgers-Newark ran off the first six points in the game, with the Scarlet Raptors responding with a 15-2 run to open a 15-8 lead with three minutes left in the first quarter.
A three-pointer followed by a three-point play from
Faith Ashby pulled Rutgers-Newark within one 1:42 into the second stanza, and a triple from
Hannah Ashby knotted the game at 17 apiece moments later.
Camden closed the first half by outscoring the Scarlet Raiders 14-8, and the hosts were able to take a 31-25 edge into the break.
Faith Ashby and Harrell combined for 16 points, and Harrell contributed five rebounds in the first 20 minutes.
After R-C went up eight early in the third, a Harrell basket pulled the guests back within three points (35-32). The teams went shot-for-shot the rest of the third, with R-N snipping one point off its halftime deficit of six to get within five (45-40) heading into the fourth.
Senior forward
Nicole Skelly quickly made it a three-point game with a layup to open the fourth-quarter scoring, but eight-straight points for the Scarlet Raptors pushed the lead to 11 with 6:10 remaining in the game (63-52).
Skelly scored three the old fashioned way to get her team back within eight, and two more from Skelly trimmed the lead to six with 58 ticks on the clock. Unfortunately, six would be as close as the Scarlet Raiders would get, falling by the 60-52 final.
Newark shot 30.4 percent from the field, 3-for-14 from distance and 15-for-28 at the line. Camden converted at a 43.3 percent clip from the floor, 33.3 percent from three and the hosts went 4-for-11 at the line. The Scarlet Raiders held a 43-41 margin on the glass, but Rutgers-Camden totaled 18 assists compared to eight for the guests. R-N was plus-six (18-12) in second-chance points, but R-C had a 26-9 margin in points off turnovers.
Sophomore forward Lajerah Wright had 13 points and nine rebounds to lead Rutgers-Camden, while senior guard Cara Racobaldo notched 13 points, nine assists and seven rebounds.
