RIVERDALE, N.Y. (October 2, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team battled to a scoreless draw at non-conference opponent New York University tonight. The Scarlet Raiders move to 5-5-2 on the season while the Violets go to 5-4-1.
Senior
Juliana Ceballos led R-N offensively with three attempts on goal, including two on target.
Junior keeper
Heidi Paulson made nine stops to earn the clean sheet while NYU goalie Meghan Marhan had four saves.
While the contest was largely played box-to-box in the first half, NYU found opportunities to test Rutgers-Newark's keeper. In the opening 20 minutes, the Violets peppered Paulson with five shots on target, but none that particularly troubled the veteran netminder. The home side also had a header that went wide in the 7
th minute off a free kick.
NYU had a strong chance in the 25
th when a midfielder found space on the left wing before sending a bouncing ball into the box. That pass was flicked on to Isabelle Turner who got off a left-footed shot from close-range, but it went straight into the keeper's arms.
The Violets' last opportunity in the stanza came off a corner in the 33
rd but the hosts committed a foul to extinguish the chance as the teams went into the break tied 0-0.
Following the intermission, NYU continued to control the majority of possession and was able to keep the ball in its attacking third for extended periods of time.
The Violets generated a flurry of chances from 50:56 to 53:40, sending two shots wide before Jade Keane won the ball and cut past a defender to put it on her left foot, but it was a comfortable save for Paulson in the end. Only 36 seconds later, a pass down the right wing allowed a midfielder to run onto it and cut the ball back to a forward. Still, Lila Kelt's effort from about eight yards away was handled easily.
The Scarlet Raiders got their first chance early in the 58
th minute when junior
Deirdre Mackin sent a left-footed free kick into the box. Ceballos was first to the ball, touching it up to herself before attempting a tough volley that went on frame but was corralled by the goalie.
Sophomore
Ana Silveira had the next opportunity in the 61
st after Mackin won a ball in her offensive third and tapped a pass to Silveira. Taking a few touches to create space, Silveira launched a left-footed strike from the edge of the 18 but it landed in the keeper's arms.
Ceballos found some space in the 73
rd minute and tried her luck from about 30 yards away, however her bouncing right-footed effort was saved.
NYU looked to break the deadlock when the home side earned a corner in the 77
th. Although the ensuing cross found the head of Sophia Foster-Palmer, her effort went wide of the net. A little under a minute later, the Violets nearly had another chance at goal but Maddie Pena's strike was blocked. Foster-Palmer had another chance at goal on a corner at 84:08 but her glancing header was wide right.
R-N had a golden opportunity in the 87
th. After an NYU foul, Ceballos was set up with a free kick about 20 yards out and slightly towards the right side of the 18. The senior ripped a strike past the wall but it went inches wide of the far left post.
Pena had the final say in regulation for the Violets but her bid at 87:48 sailed wide.
The Raiders return to action on Saturday when they host New Jersey Athletic Conference foe Rutgers-Camden at 7:30 p.m.
