Ceballos Leads Raiders Past NJCU in OT on Senior Night, 3-2

NEWARK, N.J. (October 24, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team took a thrilling come-from-behind overtime victory on Senior Night against visiting New Jersey Athletic Conference opponent NJCU on Frederick Douglass Field, 3-2. The Scarlet Raiders end their 2018 campaign with a record of 7-8-3 (3-5-1 NJAC) while the Gothic Knights fall to 5-10-0 (0-8-0 NJAC).

Before the match, Rutgers-Newark honored five seniors: Mayada Ahmed, Sunna Baig, Juliana Ceballos, Melissa Chaquea, and Heather Kosinski.

On the field, Ceballos made the difference. First, she tied the contest at 2-2 with under eight minutes to play in regulation on a penalty kick and then she ended the game with her 11th goal of the season and sixth career match-winner at 93:09 when she blasted, a shot from a couple yards outside the box that deflected off the keeper's hands but went in to send Raider fans home happy.

Ceballos led R-N with her brace and chipped an assist for a fantastic five-point night. Junior Ine Collins had the other goal for the hosts. Classmate Heidi Paulson earned the win with two saves while Cidney Lee-Sam made one stop and suffered the loss.

The Scarlet Raiders outshot the visitors 23-6 for the match, edging them in attempts on frame 5-4 and holding a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.

The Gothic Knights struck first against the run of play in the 24th. Mallensy Vargas attacked from the left wing and beat a defender outside the box before dribbling in on goal. Her shot at the near post was denied but Rosa Bonilla was there to smash home the rebound.

NJCU would take that 1-0 lead into the break.

The second half came down to a wild last 20 minutes. Newark finally got its equalizer at 70:32 when Ceballos whipped in a cross from the right wing off a free kick. Her curling ball found the foot of Collins who deposited the ball in the right-side of the net for her first goal of the season.

Still, the Gothic Knights struck back less than five minutes later. Vargas stepped over a free kick from about 25 yards out and blasted a curling ball over the wall and near the top-left corner to put her team back in front.

That set the stage for Ceballos' heroics who delivered two scores 11 minutes apart to send the Scarlet Raiders into overtime and then home with a victory.
