Women's Basketball Fall to FDU-Florham on the Road

MADISON, N.J. (November 18, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's basketball team completed its appearance in the FDU-Florham Tournament this afternoon against the hosts. This was the second time the Scarlet Raiders faced the Devils in less than a week and for the second time the decision went in favor of the home squad as R-N lost 74-59.

The Raiders move to 2-1 on the season while the Devils improve to 3-1.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Tuesday night when they host Ramapo College for both teams' New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opener at 6 p.m. in The Golden Dome.

Rutgers-Newark was led by junior Louise Ann Borja who scored a team-best 18 points in addition to four rebounds, three assists, and a steal. Senior Faith Ashby joined her in double-digits with 16 points while chipping in team-highs of seven boards, five steals, and four dimes. Junior Hannah Ashby rounded out the double-figure scorers with 14 points on 6-of-14 shooting from the field including two 3-pointers.

The teams had a competitive first quarter that featured three lead changes and three ties. FDU-Florham had an early six-point edge but Borja pulled her side back with an individual 7-0 run on four freebies and a trifecta. Unfortunately, that would be the only lead of the contest for the visitors.

The Devils responded with the last four points of the opening 10 minutes and expanded that advantage to seven at 34-27 headed into the locker rooms.

FDU-Florham continued to build on its momentum and led by as many as 21 in the third period. Rutgers-Newark closed within 10 on a Faith Ashby free throw with 4:53 remaining but that would be as close as her team would get.
