WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (December 30, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's basketball team completed its 2018 slate in the championship game of the Hoops for Hounds Tournament hosted by Lycoming College. Rosemont College defeated Rutgers-Newark 69-59 to take home the trophy this afternoon as the Ravens improve to 8-3 and the Scarlet Raiders move to 7-6.
R-N was led by senior
Faith Ashby who was named to the All-Tournament Team. After a 25-point effort last night in a victory over Lycoming, Ashby put up a game-high 20 points in addition to four assists and three steals. Rookie
Dorian Capurso recorded a double-double with 10 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Capurso was incredibly efficient offensively, going 2-for-2 from the field and 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Junior
Hannah Ashby rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points, mostly generated from a 7-for-10 day at the charity stripe.
The Raiders return to New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play after the New Year as they host Rutgers-Camden at 6 p.m. on Saturday January 5
th.
In the first quarter, the Ravens held an early 10-5 lead and maintained that five-point advantage until 1:40 remaining in the period.
R-N stormed back in the last 90 seconds, scoring the final six points of the first to take a slim 15-14 advantage. Freshman
Elisha India Cross began the rally with a freebie before
Hannah Ashby drained a shot from beyond the arc and then added a pair of free throws to cap the surge.
Rosemont regained control early in the second quarter. The Ravens scored the first six points of the period to restore a five-point cushion.
The Raiders would get back within two points on a
Hannah Ashby free throw but that was as close as they would get. Rosemont expanded its lead to 33-23 with 1:47 to go before the half while Newark scrapped back within seven at the break.
Trailing 37-28 at the 6:26 mark in the third, the Scarlet Raiders looked to get back into the game. Capurso knocked down a jumper, junior
Comfort Akinbo hit back-to-back lay-ups, and
Hannah Ashby converted a shot from the line to make it a 37-35 contest.
Unfortunately, the Ravens would not concede their lead and had a more comfortable 47-39 edge heading into the fourth.
Rosemont took complete control in the final period as its lead ballooned to 60-42 with 4:02 to play.
R-N closed the game on a 10-2 spurt, featuring four points from Capurso and six from
Faith Ashby, resulting in the final 62-52 margin.
