Women's Soccer Routs Panthers in Soccer Fest Nightcap

NEWARK, N.J. (September 5, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team earned its first win of the young season tonight during Soccer Fest on newly minted Frederick Douglass Field with a rout of the visiting Old Westbury Panthers, 8-0. The Scarlet Raiders improve to 1-1-1 while the Panthers fall to 0-2.

Rutgers-Newark had a dominating performance, outshooting the visitors 35-0, including 22-0 in attempts on frame, and earned 10 corners to only one for Old Westbury.

The Raiders were led by junior Julianna Ceballos who scored two goals and added an assist while classmate Shayna Bohus added a tally and a pair of helpers. Five more players found the back of the net and another three chipped in an assist.

Sophomore keeper Jasmin Erichsen earned the win while combining for the clean sheet with junior Heidi Paulson and rookie Nina Gonzalez.

R-N returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Frostburg State at 1 p.m.

The Scarlet Raiders scored early and often in the opening period as the home team controlled possession and the pace of the match. Sophomore Ana Silveira struck first just over two minutes into the game when Bohus fed her a pass into the left side of the box. Silveira took advantage of the opportunity, finishing into the right side of the net from a tough angle.

Seven minutes later it was Bohus' turn to tally, this time on an assist from junior Heather Kosinski. Kosinski played a through ball towards the 18 that Bohus ran onto, took a few touches, and then blasted a shot into the right side of the goal.

Ceballos added to the lead in the 23rd, again on an opportunity created by Bohus. Bohus played a through ball into the right side of the box for Ceballos who finished with a one-time shot to the bottom left-hand corner of the net.

In the 27th minute, it was Ceballos creating the scoring chance as she got in behind the defense and earned a penalty. Junior captain Deirdre Mackin converted into bottom right-hand corner for her first of the season to make it 4-0 which became the halftime tally.

R-N added to its lead in the 59th minute when rookie Jill McCourt sent a ball down the right flank for sophomore Iasia Goeloe. Goeloe did the rest, beating her defender to the ball and ripping a shot off the goalie's hands and into the net from a very tight angle near the touchline.

Ceballos made it a brace in the 71st minute when she corralled a throw-in on the right wing, dribbled past a few defenders into the box, and then slid her shot into the left-side netting.

Ceballos played facilitator on the next tally, sending a ball down the right side for freshman Maria Miranda who chased it down near the end line. Miranda cut her pass back across the six-yard box for sophomore Melanie Egas who drilled a low, one-time strike into the bottom left-hand corner for her first of the season.

In the 84th minute, rookie Jessica Moreno capped the scoring when she ripped a fantastic shot from just outside the 18 to the upper right 90 to open her collegiate account.
