Comets Too Strong For Scarlet Raiders As WBB Falls, 91-57

RICHARDSON, Texas | Elisha India Cross tied her season-high with 15 points this afternoon at the UTD Activity Center in the 91-57 defeat to UT-Dallas in the Courtyard Classic.

Rutgers University-Newark (1-10) shot 37% from the floor and 33.3% from behind the arc. Samiyah Horton was effective in limited minutes, scoring 9 points in 13 minutes of action. Brielle Mattiello, Comfort Akinbo, and Ebony Odom Barnes each tallied four rebounds which led the team. Akinbo added eight points while Louise Ann Borja added seven.

UT-Dallas (7-3) was led by Raenett Hughes with 24 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the floor. Natalie Miller led the Comets with 9 rebounds while adding 12 points. Victoria Pena dished out a team-high seven assists and added 13 points, second-highest on the team.

The Scarlet Raiders were down just 9 after the first quarter but a 37-point offensive outburst by the Comets in the second quarter blew the game open.

The University of Texas at Dallas quickly jumped out to a 20 point lead just two minutes into the second quarter which set the tone for the remainder of the half. Hannah Ashby broke the Scarlet Raiders' scoreless spell with a jumper at the 7:52 mark. Rutgers University-Newark tried to chip away at the lead, however, the Comets shot a red hot 65% from the floor to keep the game out of reach.

A cold spell during the third quarter further set the Scarlet Raiders back as they scored eight points while the Comets poured in 20.

In the fourth quarter, the Scarlet Raiders had their best offensive output of the game, scoring 23 points while holding their opponents to 15. Cross helped the Scarlet Raiders go on a 6-2 run to end the game but the run was too late as Rutgers University-Newark ran out of time.

Up next for the Scarlet Raiders will be on Wednesday, January 8 at the Golden Dome against NJAC opponents, Montclair University.
