Women's Basketball Holds Off Rowan for Big NJAC Win, 46-42

GLASSBORO, N.J. (February 9, 2019) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's basketball team picked up a huge New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) victory at Rowan University tonight, 46-42. The Scarlet Raiders improve to 13-11 (10-7 NJAC) while the Profs are now 14-10 (12-5 NJAC).

Rutgers-Newark was led by rookie Dorian Capurso who was the team's lone double-digit scorer with 13 points. She made it a double-double with a squad-high 13 rebounds while adding four steals. Senior Faith Ashby chipped in with 10 rebounds, six points, and a team-best three assists. Junior Louise Ann Borja was an important contributor off the bench with seven points on 1-of-2 shooting from the field and a 5-for-6 night at the charity stripe.

The Raiders close their 2018-19 campaign on Wednesday for Senior Night against league opponent Stockton at 6 p.m.

The first quarter was a see-saw affair that featured six lead changes and two ties. The squads traded the lead four times in the opening three and a half minutes ending on an Elisha India Cross lay-in that made it 5-4.

The first deadlock came at 6-6 before Capurso, Faith Ashby, and junior Hannah Ashby each scored to make it 12-6 in favor of the visitors.

Still, Rowan battled right back and with 1:19 to go in the period evened the contest at 12-12. Hannah Ashby closed the scoring in the first with a freebie to provide a slim 13-12 edge for the Raiders.

The beginning of the second had a similar theme to the first as the lead changed hands twice in the first couple minutes. This quarter would be different however as R-N pulled away with 5:56 to go before halftime.

Leading 19-16, the Scarlet Raiders reeled off the next 11 points to claim a commanding 30-16 lead heading into the break. Three different players contributed to the big run with Borja chipping in four points, junior Comfort Akinbo adding four, and freshman Syncere Lambert hitting a trifecta.

The Profs came out firing in the second half, opening the third on an 8-0 run that quickly sliced their deficit to six in under two minutes.

Faith Ashby got R-N on the board with lay-up but Kennedy Brown responded immediately to keep the lead at six.

The visitors were able to push the lead back to nine with free throws from Borja, Akinbo, and Hannah Ashby as they took a 36-27 lead headed to the fourth.

After Rowan began the fourth with a basket, Newark regained a double-digit advantage as Hannah and Faith Ashby each scored to make it 40-29.

A Capurso lay-in with 7:27 to play maintained that 11-point margin but the Profs would not concede. The hosts battled all the way back, going on an 11-0 run that was capped by an Olivia Rulen trifecta that tied the contest at 42-42.

In the final four minutes, Capurso came up huge at the charity stripe with some clutch free throws while the Rutgers-Newark defense stayed strong. Capurso hit three shots at the line to create a 45-42 gap with 1:59 remaining before sealing the game, after a pair of defensive stops, on a freebie with just 12 seconds on the clock.
