MAHWAH, N.J. | The Scarlet Raiders battled the Roadrunners of Ramapo College this afternoon at Ramapo College after the recent rains made Frederick Douglass Field unplayable. A late run in game one by the Roadrunners lifted them to a 1-0 win over the Scarlet Raiders before following that up with a 6-0 no-hitter win in game two.
Game 1: Ramapo 1, Rutgers-Newark 0
Jackie Lara (5-5) pitched well for the Scarlet Raiders holding the Roadrunners hit less through three innings. Ramapo finally tallied a hit in the fourth inning to break their drought. Rutgers University-Newark (12-20, 3-7 NJAC) scattered five hits throughout the course of the game but was unable to bring in a run. With both pitchers imposing their will hits came at a premium and Ramapo (18-10, 9-3 NJAC) was able to use a hit and an error to score their lone run of game one.
Rutgers University-Newark came out hot in the bottom of the sixth and quickly loaded the bases.
Alyssa Morales got the inning started with a successful bunt which was followed up with a single by Jackie Arute.
Brielle Mattiello successfully moved her teammates over with a sacrifice bunt which allowed Lara to load the bases on an error by the catcher. The Scarlet Raiders were primed to take the lead with the bases loaded and just one out. The Roadrunners would solidify their defense and record two fly outs to get out of the inning unscathed.
Arute highlighted the Scarlet Raiders by going 2-for-3 at the plate while Lara,
Sam Morton, and Morales recorded the other three hits for their squad. Lara finished the game in the circle with five strikeouts on 113 pitches and walked just one batter while allowing five hits.
Game 2: Ramapo 6, Rutgers-Newark 0
Unlike game one, the bats were not cold for the visitors. Ramapo quickly got off to a good start, tallying four runs on five hits. The Roadrunners tallied four straight hits with two of them being doubles by Howarth and Patsko.
Paige Masiello was called upon to replace
Michelle Capizzano (2-8) in the circle and was able to get out of the inning.
Rutgers University-Newark looked ready to cut into the lead with back-to-back walks, however, they would be stranded on the bases leaving them scoreless in the opening stanza. Another double by the Roadrunners added another run to their tally, boosting their lead to 5-0 after just two innings of play.
After recording five hits in game one, the Scarlet Raiders struggled to find their bats and were held without a hit for the first time this season.
The Scarlet Raiders will look to rebound when they take on New Jersey City University on Thursday, April 18 at Frederick Douglass Field beginning at 3:00 pm.
