GLASSBORO, N.J. | Rutgers University-Newark traveled south this afternoon to take on No. 24 ranked Rowan University in an NJAC doubleheader. The Profs swept the Scarlet Raiders via 16-0, 9-1 score lines to improve to 24-10, 10-4 while Rutgers University-Newark dropped to 14-22, 5-9 NJAC.
Game 1: No. 24 Rowan University 16, Rutgers University-Newark 0 (5 inn.)
Jackie Lara (6-6) started in the circle for the Scarlet Raiders in game one and was relieved by
Paige Masiello after two innings. Lara struck out a pair of batters while allowing eight runs on six hits.
Lara was one of two batters for the Scarlet Raiders to record a hit, going 1-for-2 with a double.
Megan Tomaselli tallied the other hit while pinch hitting and also hit a double.
Kelly Duffy went 2-for-2 with five RBI and a pair of runs for Rowan University while Cassandra Gerard went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a trio of runs. Jesse DeDomenico (13-5) struck out five batters and allowed just one hit in the win.
The Profs scored in every inning in game one with their highest output coming in the second inning when Duffy hit a three-run homer after Gerard singled up the middle to bring in a pair of runs.
Lara looked to get the Scarlet Raiders going in the top of the fourth with a double down the left field line, however, she would be stranded as they struggled to find their bats.
Game 2: No. 24 Rowan University 9, Rutgers University-Newark 1
Michelle Capizzano (2-9) tallied three strikeouts in game two and allowed 9 runs on 11 hits in the loss.
Brielle Mattiello had the lone multi-hit game for the Scarlet Raiders, going 2-for-3 with a run.
Julie Contravo finished 1-for-3 with an RBI while Same Morton and
Samantha Hoffman each picked up a hit.
Lauren Shannon (9-5) hurled eight strikeouts in the win while allowing five hits and just one run. Morgan Zane finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs while Carly Anderson went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a run.
Capizzano was able to stifle the Profs' prolific offense for three innings before Rowan got their bats going in the bottom of the fourth. After a pair of singles put two runners on an Anderson single brought in the opening run for Rowan.
Rowan opened the game up in the bottom of the fifth by scoring six runs to put the game out of reach for the Scarlet Raiders.
Rutgers University-Newark finally got on the board in the sixth inning when Mattiello singled down the left field line and was brought home by a Contravo double to left field.
The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Tuesday, April 23 when they travel to Ewing, NJ to take on The College of New Jersey at 2:30 pm.
