NEWARK, N.J. | The Scarlet Raiders women's soccer found themselves back in the win column this evening with a 12-1 rout of St. Joseph's College - Brooklyn. Rutgers University-Newark (6-4) used seven different goal scorers to topple St. Joseph's College - Brooklyn (6-3).
Sabria Glasgow picked up her second hattrick of the season and was joined by
Jillian McCourt who scored her first career hattrick, all in the second half.
Ana Silveira wasted no time putting the Scarlet Raiders up 1-0 in tonight's non-conference game.
Maria Miranda won the ball on the right flank and sent in a high curling cross which allowed Silveira to position herself underneath it to head it over Reem Shaban's head. It would take 9 more minutes before the Scarlet Raiders doubled up their lead.
Jessica Moreno dribbled past a pair of Bears defenders and launched a shot into the back of the net, just out of the reach of Shaban's hands.
In the 27th minute,
Melanie Egas would net her first of two goals in the contest when she intercepted a pass which was destined for a Bears defender and slipped her shot underneath Shaban. In the 41st and 44th minute, Glasgow picked up her first pair of goals with assists from
Ava Dul and
Breanna Costa. Rutgers University-Newark would head into halftime with a 5-0 lead.
St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn would get one back just five minutes into the second half. A foul inside the 18-yard box set up a Deserae Sequeira penalty kick. Sequeira wouldn't waste the opportunity as she powered it into the right side to cut into the lead.Â
Possession of the game tonight was dominated by the Scarlet Raiders with Rutgers University-Newark holding the ball for 73% of the time.Â
The surge of offense wouldn't last for the Bears, however, as Glasgow would net her third goal of the game.
Bailey Kellenberger found success down the right flank all game and was finally able to find the head of Glasgow with a cross. Glasgow, like Silveira earlier, headed the ball over the keepers head to put the Scarlet Raiders up 6-1.Â
Deirdre Mackin would secure her second goal of the season just one minute later when the Scarlet Raiders were awarded a penalty kick. Mackin would calmly step to the spot and place the ball into the left side to increase their lead once more.
Shayna Bohus was able to get in on the scoring action in the 64th minute when
Samantha Richter dribbled to the corner of the 18-yard box and passed it out to Bohus who was lingering just beyond the box. Bohus took a touch and laced her shot into the top left corner of the goal.Â
McCourt replaced Bohus and would go on to score a hattrick of her own on assists by Moreno,
Sarah Suero, and
Iasia Goeloe. McCourt's third was the final tally the Scarlet Raiders would put up on the board as they possessed the ball for the remainder of the game to secure the win.
Up next for the Scarlet Raiders is a New Jersey Athletic Conference matchup with Stockton University on Saturday, September 28 at 7:30 pm at Frederick Douglass Field.
