GLASSBORO, NJ | The women's basketball team squared off against the Profs of Rowan University this afternoon in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) showdown. The Profs proved to be too powerful for the Scarlet Raiders as they cruised to an 89-50 win.
Rutgers University-Newark (2-14, 0-9) had
Comfort Akinbo tally a team-high 10 points on 4-for-6 shooting from the floor.
Ebony Odom Barnes led the charge on the boards with 9 rebounds while
Elisha India Cross dished out five assists.
Hannah Ashby added eight points while
Louise Ann Borja secured six.
Rowan University (14-2, 8-1) was led by Eliana Santana and Alexis Kriley with 15 points each. Ayanna Johnson just missed collecting a double-double by scoring 9 points and pulling down a game-high 15 rebounds. Nicole Mallard played quality defense and tallied seven of her teams 18 steals.
The offense for the Scarlet Raiders didn't get off to a good start as they were outscored 18-6 in the first quarter. The Profs jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first three minutes before Borja cashed in on a pair from the charity stripe. With five minutes left in the first,
Comfort Akinbo pulled up and hit a jumper to cut the lead down to three. Rowan picked up their defense and held the Scarlet Raiders scoreless for the remainder of the quarter.
Rutgers University-Newark's cold spell carried over to the second quarter where the Scarlet Raiders didn't score until there were five minutes left in the half. During that 10 minute scoreless streak, Rowan pushed their lead out 26.
In the second half, the Scarlet Raiders had their highest output of the game, netting 21 points. However, the Profs kept their lead as they poured in 25 more points to keep their 20+ point lead.
Rutgers University-Newark was unable to overcome their deficit as they dropped their second straight game.
The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Wednesday, January 22 where they will play host to Ramapo College for their second meeting of the season.
