EWING, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders fell short in winning their second in a row today as they squared up against a very tough opponent in The College of New Jersey (TCNJ). The now 12-6 TCNJ took on the 3-15 Scarlet Raiders and proved to be a top team in the conference after pulling off a 73-40 victory leading wire to wire.
Shannon Devitt of TCNJ dominated the action as she put 33 points in 33 minutes shooting 14-for-23 from the field, snagging 9 rebounds along the way, while connecting on 5-of-6 free throws.
For the second game in a row,
Hannah Ashby of the Scarlet Raiders led her team in points going 4-for-18 from the field and 2-for-2 from the line.
Ebony Odom Barnes contributed for the Scarlet Raiders with five points and 9 rebounds of her own.
The Scarlet Raiders shot 25% from the floor this afternoon with 20 points coming from inside the paint compared to TCNJ's 41.4% shooting with 42 points from inside the paint.
The Rutgers-Newark women forced 12 turnovers in this one but could not take full advantage as they only scored two points off such plays.
In the third quarter, the Scarlet Raiders made a push after outscoring the Lions, 13-11. The height of the Lions proved to be too much for the Scarlet Raiders as they were unable to overcome their double-digit deficit.
