NEWARK, NJ | The women's basketball team won their second New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game of the season with the 51-45 win over Rutgers University-Camden this evening at the Golden Dome.
Rutgers University-Newark (4-18, 2-13) was led by
Syncere Lambert's 12 points.
Hannah Ashby earned her second career double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Comfort Akinbo and
Elisha India Cross scored 11 and 10, respectively. Cross led the team with four steals.
Rutgers University-Camden (11-11, 4-11) had Shane Holmes pour in a game-high 18 points while Jalissa Pitt paced the team with 14 rebounds. Fatimah Williams picked up three steals and the team as a whole recorded five blocks.
The Scarlet Raiders found success in the opening stanza of the game against their sister school from Camden, NJ, Rutgers University-Camden. The women came out and scored 17 points in the opening quarter and held the Scarlet Raptors to just five points. Rutgers-Newark was proficient from the charity stripe hitting 7-of-12.
Through the first seven minutes of the first quarter, Akinbo was able to dominate inside the paint which put the Scarlet Raiders out in front 10-0.
Elisha India Cross also hit a triple during that opening run to help keep her team ahead. Jalissa Pitts finally got the Scarlet Raptors on the board with 2:32 left after she hit a mid-range jumper.
The second quarter wasn't kind to the Scarlet Raiders as they tallied just five points which allowed the Scarlet Raptors to make a comeback in the game. Shane Holmes hit a three-point basket to make it a three-point game with 7:40 remaining. As the second quarter wore on, points came at a premium as both teams struggled from the field. At the half, the Scarlet Raiders held a 22-16 lead despite a cold second quarter.
Play leveled out of the half as the Scarlet Raiders scored 14 points while the Scarlet Raptors scored 13. After Rutgers-Camden cut the lead down to one,
Syncere Lambert cashed in from range to boost her team's lead back out to four. After a three minute scoreless streak, the Scarlet Raiders ended it with a 6-0 run to give themselves a 10-point lead.
In the fourth, the Scarlet Raptors continued to chip away at the lead, however, the Scarlet Raiders did enough to stay ahead and hit their free-throws as time dwindled down to earn their second NJAC win of the season.
