NEWARK, NJ | The offensive onslaught of the Cougars from Kean University continued this afternoon as Rutgers University-Newark women's basketball team was unable to slow them down in a 91-69 defeat.
Rutgers University-Newark (2-4, 2-4) was once again led by Ebony Odom Barnes in this contest with another 18-point, 13-rebound double-double. Samiyah Horton found success from the floor tonight and collected 16 points and six rebounds. Radaisha Talley recorded a career-high 10 points in the loss tonight and added a block and a rebound to her stat sheet. Elisha India Cross led the squad with six dimes while adding seven points and a trio of rebounds.
Kean University (2-6, 2-6 NJAC) had Shannon McCoy to lean on once again as she paced her team with 24 points. Brittany Graff collected a team-high eight assists and added 15 points while Sarah Olivero tallied 12 points. On the boards, it was Shahd Badeer who led the team with 10.
The game opened with a rapid pace of play with both teams trading baskets, which ultimately gave the Scarlet Raiders an 8-5 lead on the back of an Odom Barnes jumper. The Cougars answered with a three-point basket to knot the game up at eight which propelled them for the rest of the game.Â
The Cougars finished the opening stanza on a 27-2 run over the Scarlet Raiders as the Cougar scoring machine got rolling. Shannon McCoy led the charge for the Cougars and ended the first quarter three points shy of a career 1,000. She quickly passed that mark in the second quarter with a corner three-point bucket.Â
Rutgers University-Newark looked as though they were gaining steam in the second quarter as they had their most productive quarter of the season with 26 points. However, the Cougars couldn't be stopped and kept their scoring streak alive and poured in 29 second-quarter points to nullify the Scarlet Raiders' second-quarter comeback attempt. Kean shot a blistering 53% from behind-the-arc in the first half. The Scarlet Raiders held an edge on the boards in the first half, 21-16, and shot a respectable 45% from the field.Â
Although the Cougars came out of the half slower than they were in the first half, the Scarlet Raiders were unable to overcome their immense deficit despite capping the game with a 20-point fourth quarter.Â
The Scarlet Raiders will now await their seeding for the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament which is set to take place next weekend.Â
