Softball Falls In NJAC Tournament

MAHWAH, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders softball program earned the #9 seed for the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship Tournament after finishing the season 2-16. With the #9 seeding, they were paired against #8 Ramapo College in the one-game elimination play-in game. The Scarlet Raiders had their season ended this afternoon after falling 4-1 at Ramapo College.

Rutgers University-Newark (2-17) recorded six hits in the loss and committed one error. Masha Corbett and Emily Bartus led the Scarlet Raiders by going 2-for-3 each while Michelle McMillan and Paige Masiello also added a hit. Masiello (1-8) pitched 6.0 innings and struck out two batters with 88 pitches.

Ramapo College (8-13) also tallied six hits and received two hits each Mahogany Wheeler and Avery Bartolomeo. Wheeler (6-6) pitched a complete game and struck out three batters with 99 pitches.

The Roadrunners took advantage of an early error that stopped them from going down in order. The error allowed the inning to continue which benefitted Ramapo as they put the first run on the board in the bottom of the first.

Rutgers-Newark responded in the top of the 3rd when Bartus hit a single up the middle before Corbett singled to the shortstop for an infield single RBI.

Ramapo scored three runs on three in the bottom of the fourth to put them ahead for good. Two of the runs came on a 2 RBI homer by Layton with a 3-2 count.

In the top of the 5th, the Scarlet Raiders looked primed to add to their tally but after a lead-off hit by Masiello, they were unable to continue the inning. The Scarlet Raiders tallied another pair of hits in the top of the 6th but they were once again stranded.

Rutgers University-Newark will now look to reload for next season where they will make another run at the NJAC Championship Tournament.
