Women's Soccer Suffers Heartbreak in PK Shootout Loss to Rutgers-Camden

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team season came to a close this afternoon in penalty kicks against Rutgers University-Camden in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Quarterfinal. The women end their season with a record of 7-8-5 while Rutgers-Camden moves on to the NJAC Semifinal round with a record of 4-8-5.

Both offenses came out strong in the first half with so much on the line. Rutgers-Camden had the better of the chances taking eight first half shots to just five of the Scarlet Raiders. Mariana Valencia had a pair of chances in the five minute span with one of the chances forcing a save from Kayla McKeever. Rutgers-Camden forced just one save from Katie McLaughlin in the first half, however, the Scarlet Raptors nearly went up 1-0 late in the first. The forward broke through and had her shot bounce off of the post and into the arms of McLaughlin. The Scarlet Raiders made a push at the end of the half but had their last run called offsides.

The second half is where both offenses were able to unlock the vault of each defense. First to crack the code was the combination of Valencia and Leila Ettayebi. Valencia found Ettayebi in the box where Ettayebi was able to bounce the shot past McKeever for the games opening goal. Rutgers-Camden would strike back 11 minutes later. Maresa Savarese took a long pass from Lauren Bone and beat an overextended McLaughlin from range to level the playing field at one.

Different from the regular season, games do not end in regulation in the playoffs and both teams got their first taste of extra time action. Neither team sat back and waited for penalty kicks as each extra time saw some of the best chances of the game with the net minders making huge saves on each end. Nevertheless, despite the offense, the game would transition to penalty kicks where Rutgers-Camden would make the most of their chances and win the penalty shootout, 4-3, to advance to the NJAC Semifinal against Montclair.
