Softball's Offense Stalled Against Ramapo

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark softball team ran into the red-hot Roadrunners this afternoon and fell 14-4 and 12-2 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader at Frederick Douglass Field.

Game 1: Ramapo 14, Rutgers-Newark 4 (5 inn.)

Rutgers-Newark (10-13, 4-7) scattered seven hits led by Michelle McMillan's pair. McMillan finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI. In the circle, Jackie Lara (5-7) pitched 3 innings and allowed five earned runs with two strikeouts.

Ramapo (18-6, 9-2) was led offensively by Alexis Corra who finished the game 3-for-4 with 5 RBIs while Katie Rygiel went 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs.

The Roadrunners got off to a hot start to open today's NJAC doubleheader against the Scarlet Raiders. Ramapo scored at least one run in every inning to activate the run rule to end the game in five innings at Frederick Douglass Field.

Ramapo started the game off with a pair of runs in the top of the stanza before the Scarlet Raiders scored two of their own. Jackie Lara got the scoring started with an RBI double to score Michelle McMillan before Michelle Capizzano evened the score with a single through the left side.

In the 2nd, Ramapo exploded for five runs after capitalizing on a pair of errors by the Scarlet Raiders. Rutgers-Newark wouldn't return to the scoreboard until the bottom of the 5th when McMillan hit an RBI triple followed by a Brianna Hernandez singled through the left side. The Scarlet Raiders' rally would come to a close when Lara grounded into a double play to end the game.

Game 2: Ramapo 12, Rutgers-Newark 2 (5 inn.)

The Scarlet Raiders (10-14, 4-8) tallied three hits in the second game and tallied two runs. Michelle Capizzano (5-6) allowed 11 earned runs with two strikeouts.

Ramapo (19-6, 10-2) used 11 hits to plate 12 runs in the game two win over the Scarlet Raiders. Mahogany Wheeler went a perfect 4-for-4 with 7 RBIs while Marissa DiPaolo (10-1) tallied eight strikeouts.

Once again Ramapo came out strong and tallied four runs in the 1st inning. Rutgers-Newark answered with a run in the bottom of the stanza when Hernandez stole second which allowed McMillan to come home after the throw to second was unsuccessful.

After a scoreless second inning, Ramapo added eight runs to their tally over the next three innings before Rutgers-Newark scored on another throw to second to double their tally.
