NEWARK, N.J
. | The Rutgers University-Newark athletics program celebrated another season with some program first achievements at the Ruth Bader Ginsburg Hall in Newark, NJ. The yearly event honors the student-athletes achievement's throughout the season with our top awards, Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, going to Daniel Reardon of baseball and Gillian Reese of women's soccer.

The evening began with a welcome from the voice of Raidervision, John Heffernan, followed by a recap of the seasons by Director of Athletics, Mark Griffin

Reardon earned several awards on the night but the biggest one came towards the end. Reardon earned Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year after posting a GPA of 3.92. Gillian Reese of women's soccer, much like Daniel Reardon, heard her name called often that evening and it all came to a point when she was awarded Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Corlisse Thomas, presented both Daniel and Gillian with their award.

The Massenburg award is given to the student-athlete who demonstrates athletic achievement, service in the community and scholastic achievement. This year Daniel Reardon met all the criteria to win the award.

Russell Ayala won the Courage and Character award which is the award for the student-athlete who was confronted with significant obstacles outside the classroom, who met their challenges with courage, strength, and resiliency and was able to successfully overcome the challenges while still excelling academically.
