Ettayebi's Game Winner Gives #RUNWSOC Their Best NJAC Start in Program History

NEWARK, NJ | Reigning NJAC Player of the Week, Leila Ettayebi, converted a late penalty kick to lift the Scarlet Raiders over William Paterson, 1-0, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) bout. The win boosts the Scarlet Raiders to 6-5-1, 2-0 while moving William Paterson down to 1-6-3, 0-2.

The 2-0 start within the NJAC is the first time in program history that the Scarlet Raiders women's soccer team have won their first two conference contests. In the first half, both squads seemed hesitant to push too much forward as the shot count was just 5-3 in favor of the Scarlet Raiders. Two of William Paterson's shots were put on target, however, they didn't pose much of a threat to Katie McLaughlin who easily made the save. Sarah Mantilla on the opposite end also had to make just two save to keep the Scarlet Raiders off of the scoreboard before the break.

In the second half, the Scarlet Raiders' offense came alive and tallied 10 shots. Tamia Howell, began to use her speed against the tired legs of William Paterson's defensive unit. Howell would go on to finish the game with a team-high six shots. As the game wore on it seemed as if the game would end in a 0-0 stalemate. That all changed in the 89th minute when a handball in the box gifted the Scarlet Raiders a penalty kick. Ettayebi confidently stepped over the ball and buried it into the low right corner for what would turn into the game-winning goal.

William Paterson pushed their numbers forward in the final minute but the Scarlet Raiders' defense nullified any attack as they held on to win 1-0.

Up Next:
The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Saturday, October 1 when travel to Rowan for a 1:00 pm NJAC showdown.
