Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Ramapo Grabs Late Winner to Take All the Points

NEWARK, NJ | Despite the Scarlet Raiders' (5-10-3) constant pressure, Ramapo (4-12-1) came out on top and took their first conference win of the season. Final Score: 2-1.

Rutgers-Newark were attacking early. Emily Karlicki recorded the first shot of the game in the second minute, and the home team produced a corner and another shot in the third. Leila Ettayebi came close several times, including a low shot that was deflected in the 12th minute.

In the 19th minute, Ruby Hogue played a long through ball over the top to find Ettayebi in behind. She tried to chip the goalkeeper, and the ball trickled agonizingly onto the post and out.

Just one minute later, Ramapo struck gold. On the first corner of the game, the back post delivery beat goalkeeper Angela Amaya, and Amanda Barr poked the ball into the empty net. It was against the run of play, but the Roadrunners took the 1-0 lead.

The Scarlet Raiders continued to push. Over and over they brought the ball forward, but they could not find the final piece of the puzzle. This continued long into the second half. Rutgers-Newark continued to pepper the opposition goal with shots to no avail.

Then, in minute 82, the Scarlet Raiders finally broke through. Ruby Hogue delivered a free kick from out wide, and Dana Nunez provided an incredible improvised finish. With her back to goal, she volleyed the ball over her head to finally bring things level. A huge sigh of relief, scoring on their 24th shot of the game.

But there was one last twist to this game. In the 88th minute, Ramapo won a free kick about 35 yards out from goal. Morgan Korinchak stepped up, and she fired a looping effort toward the net which fell just below the crossbar and above the reach of Amaya. Unbelievably, the Roadrunners scored again and took their lead right back.

And that is how the game would end. An improbable loss to end what has been a difficult season for the Rutgers-Newark women's soccer team. They complete their 2024 campaign with a 5-10-3 overall record, and an NJAC record of 1-7-1.
