Scarlet Raiders Edged by New Paltz in Road Match

New Paltz, N.Y. — The Rutgers-Newark women's soccer team fell 1-0 to SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday afternoon at South Turf Field, as a second-half goal proved to be the difference in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) matchup.

After a scoreless opening half, both teams continued to battle for the breakthrough. The Scarlet Raiders kept the game within reach behind a strong performance from goalkeeper Maura Chawner, who finished with five saves across 90 minutes.

New Paltz broke through in the 72nd minute when Erin Savarese found the back of the net to give the Hawks the lead.

Rutgers-Newark pushed for an equalizer in the closing minutes, creating late opportunities to get back into the match. Genesis Sarango nearly leveled the score in the 89th minute, but her shot struck the crossbar as the Hawks held on for the shutout victory.

The Scarlet Raiders finished with seven shots, putting three on target, while Samantha Vieira and Eliza Haghighi each recorded a shot on goal. Rutgers-Newark also earned three corner kicks in the contest.

Rutgers-Newark returns home on Saturday, October 17, for Senior Day against Rutgers-Camden. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Frederick Douglass Field.
