Late Goal Sinks Scarlet Raiders on the Road

GALLOWAY, N.J. — The Rutgers-Newark women's soccer team battled Stockton University to a 1-0 decision Wednesday night at G. Larry James Stadium.

The Scarlet Raiders (5-3-3, 1-2-0 NJAC) kept Stockton scoreless through the opening 45 minutes, with sophomore goalkeeper Maura Chawner making five saves in the first half. Rutgers-Newark registered one shot in the opening half, while Stockton put five shots on goal.

Chawner continued to keep the Scarlet Raiders within striking distance in the second half, making eight more saves to finish with a season-high 13 stops on the night. Stockton eventually broke through in the 82nd minute when Bella Bednarz came out of the scramble after a corner kick to score the lone goal of the match.

Rutgers-Newark pushed for the equalizer late. Vielka Fernandez put two shots on target in the final 11 minutes, but Stockton goalkeeper Tori Vliet turned both away to preserve the shutout.

Stockton finished with a 14-3 advantage in shots, while Rutgers-Newark earned three corner kicks to Stockton's nine.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action Saturday, October 10, hosting #10 TCNJ at Frederick Douglass Field.
