NEWBURGH, N.Y. — The Rutgers-Newark women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Mount Saint Mary on Saturday afternoon at Kaplan Field.
The Scarlet Raiders (2-1-1) fell behind in the 13th minute when Mount Saint Mary's Grace Morra found the back of the net off an assist from Kaitlyn Shotter. The goal proved to be the difference as Rutgers-Newark was unable to find an equalizer over the final 78 minutes.
Rutgers-Newark created several opportunities throughout the match, finishing with eight shots, including two on goal. Genesis Sarango led the Scarlet Raiders with three shots, while Vielka Fernandez added three shots and put one on frame.
Maura Chawner kept Rutgers-Newark within striking distance, making six saves in a complete 90-minute effort. Chawner made two saves in the opening half before turning aside four more attempts after halftime.
The Scarlet Raiders continued to pressure Mount Saint Mary in the second half, recording seven of their eight total shots after the break. Fernandez had a pair of second-half attempts, including a shot saved by Mount Saint Mary goalkeeper Julianna Ewashko in the 70th minute.
Rutgers-Newark earned four corner kicks in the match, including two in the opening 90 seconds and another late in the second half, but could not capitalize on its set-piece opportunities.
Rutgers-Newark returns to Frederick Douglass Field on Monday, September 14th as they look to get back on track against St. Joseph's University (Brooklyn).
