Women's Soccer Roll Past St. Joseph's Brooklyn

NEWARK, N.J. — The Rutgers-Newark women's soccer team dominated from start to finish Monday night, rolling to an 8-0 victory over St. Joseph's University Brooklyn at Frederick Douglass Field.

The Scarlet Raiders (3-1-1) wasted no time taking control, scoring four goals in the opening 15 minutes.

Samantha Vieira opened the scoring in the ninth minute, finishing off a combination from Eliza Haghighi and Gabrielle Negvesky. Just over a minute later, Haghighi doubled the lead with an assist from Juliana NunezDana Nunez made it 3-0 in the 14th minute off a feed from Vieira, while her twinJuliana Nunez added the fourth goal just 70 seconds later, assisted by Keliah Cottrell and Ashley Solarte

Rutgers-Newark continued to apply pressure throughout the opening half, finishing the first 45 minutes with a 19-0 advantage in shots.

The Scarlet Raiders added two more goals before halftime. In the 42nd minute, Hailey Sharpe found the back of the net off a pass from Bella Togias. Sharpe, who normally plays goalkeeper, saw action in the field Monday night and made the most of the opportunity, scoring her first goal of her collegiate career.  

Josephine Mwenda added another goal just 94 seconds later, sending Rutgers-Newark into the break with a commanding 6-0 advantage. 

The Scarlet Raiders continued their offensive attack in the second half, with Perla Guevara scoring twice in the final 13 minutes. Guevara's first goal cameoff an assist from Naina Patti before she capped the scoring eight minutes later for her second goal of the night. 

Guevara led the Scarlet Raiders with two goals and five shots on goal, while Vieira, Haghighi, Dana Nunez, Juliana Nunez, Sharpe and Mwenda each added a goal. Rutgers-Newark recorded 30 shots, including 17 on target, while earning 10 corner kicks. 

Defensively, Alisha Perez recorded her first shutout of the season, as the Scarlet Raiders completely stifled the St. Joseph's attack. The visitors finished the match without a shot, while Perez did not need to make a save. 

Rutgers-Newark will return to action Wednesday when it travels to face off with the Gryphons of Sarah Lawerence College.
