YONKERS, N.Y. — Junior goalkeeper Maura Chawner made nine saves to record her second shutout of the season as Rutgers-Newark battled Sarah Lawrence College to a 0-0 draw Saturday night at Fleming Field.
The Scarlet Raiders, who move to 3-1-2 on the season, were tested throughout the contest as Sarah Lawrence generated 14 shots, including nine on target. Chawner answered every challenge, making two saves in the opening half before turning aside seven shots after halftime.
Sarah Lawrence created several opportunities early, but Chawner kept the match scoreless. She stopped Phoebe Workman in the 23rd minute before denying Zoey Barth with just two minutes remaining in the opening half.
The home team continued to pressure after halftime, but Chawner remained up to the task. She made consecutive saves on Katey Beaver and Workman early in the second half before stopping shots from Stella Sturgill in the 56th and 82nd minutes.
With the match still scoreless, Chawner came up big again late, making three saves in the final seven minutes. She denied Sturgill in the 84th minute and followed with stops on Camila Vasquez and another Sturgill attempt to preserve the shutout.
Rutgers-Newark had four shots on the night, with Samantha Vieira registering the Scarlet Raiders' lone shot on goal. Vieira's attempt in the 66th minute was saved by Sarah Lawrence goalkeeper Bella Vaca.
Rutgers-Newark returns home this Saturday as they host Eastern University.
