NEWARK, N.J. — The Rutgers-Newark women's soccer team closed out its non-conference schedule in dominant fashion Monday night, rolling past Medgar Evers, 13-0, at Frederick Douglass Field.
The Scarlet Raiders (4-1-3) scored 10 goals in the opening 36 minutes and added three more in the second half to secure the shutout victory. Rutgers-Newark finished with a 35-0 advantage in shots, including a 21-0 edge in shots on goal.
Keliah Cottrell led the offensive attack with a pair of goals, scoring the game's opening tally in the eighth minute off an assist from Vielka Fernandez. Cottrell struck again in the 21st minute, this time with Gabrielle Negvesky providing the assist.
Fernandez added a goal of her own just over a minute after Cottrell's opener, while Samantha Vieira followed less than a minute later to give the Scarlet Raiders a 3-0 lead. Dana Nunez, Eliza Haghighi, Kimberly Vera and Juliana Candido also found the back of the net during a 10-goal first half.
Ashley Solarte and Perla Guevara capped the first-half scoring, with Guevara's goal coming off assists from Solarte and Josephine Mwenda.
Rutgers-Newark continued its offensive pressure after halftime, with Negvesky scoring in the 51st minute off a feed from Genesis Sarango. Annabella Velaj added a goal in the 67th minute before Sarango closed out the scoring in the 69th minute, assisted by Mwenda.
The Scarlet Raiders spread the scoring around throughout the night, with 12 different players finding the back of the net. Negvesky and Velaj, who typically play in the backline, each added a goal to their respective stat lines.
Sarango finished with a goal and three assists to lead all players with five points. Fernandez, Vieira, Negvesky, Solarte and Guevara each finished with a goal and an assist, while Mwenda contributed two assists.
In goal, Alisha Perez played all 90 minutes and recorded the shutout without facing a shot, as Medgar Evers was held without a shot attempt for the entire match.
The Scarlet Raiders now turn their attention to New Jersey Athletic Conference play, opening the conference portion of their schedule Wednesday as they host William Paterson.
