NEWARK, N.J. - Rutgers-Newark women's soccer wrapped up the Brick City Classic Sunday afternoon with a 1-1 draw against Bard College at Frederick Douglass Field.
The Scarlet Raiders finished the weekend unbeaten at 1-0-1 after opening the tournament with a 3-0 victory over CCNY. Rutgers-Newark finished second in the four-team field behind Kean University, which went 2-0 to claim the Brick City Classic championship.
Rutgers-Newark wasted little time finding the back of the net against Bard. Samantha Vieira put the Scarlet Raiders ahead just 2:20 into the match, finishing for her second goal of the season off an assist from Keliah Cottrell.
Bard responded in the 30th minute when Brooke Egrestis found the back of the net to even the match at 1-1. The Scarlet Raiders entered halftime tied with Bard despite the visitors holding a 4-2 advantage in shots.
Newark came out with increased pressure in the second half, recording five shots after halftime compared to two in the opening 45 minutes. Vieira created multiple opportunities, while Genesis Sarango and Ashley Solarte each put shots on target. Bard goalkeeper Julianna LaFond turned aside three second-half shots to keep the match level.
At the other end, Maura Chawner kept the Scarlet Raiders even with a strong performance in goal. Chawner made five saves, including four in the second half, as Bard finished with six shots on goal. Neither side could find a game-winning goal in the final 45 minutes as the teams settled for the 1-1 draw.
Vieira led the Scarlet Raiders with four shots, while Solarte added two shots on goal in 13 minutes of action. Cottrell recorded the lone assist for Newark.
The Scarlet Raiders were represented by three players on the Brick City Classic All-Tournament Team. Vielka Fernandez, Samantha Vieira and J'nyyah Young earned All-Tournament honors for Rutgers-Newark.
Kean finished the tournament unbeaten at 2-0, defeating Bard, 7-0, before earning an 8-0 victory over CCNY. Kean's Carly Gleason was named the Brick City Classic Most Valuable Player.
