Sergio Rodriguez is in his first season as an assistant coach with the Rutgers University-Newark softball coaching staff.
Rodriguez is staying home to coach with the Scarlet Raiders as a Newark native who has led the Newark Academy High School softball team since March 2007. In his first season with the team, Rodriguez broke the school's wins record en route to a state championship appearance while winning the Star Ledger's State Softball Coach of the Year award.
Simultaneously, since the fall of 2006, Rodriguez has run the New Jersey Heist Organization, a group of travel softball teams based out of Bloomfield, N.J. Rodriguez has taken these teams all across the country for major tournaments and has had numerous players move on to the college ranks including many NJAC programs. Rodriguez is well known and respected throughout New Jersey and in the softball world.
