March 2016 National Athletic Training Month Profile

Brian D. Fanning Jr. became the Head Athletic Trainer of the intercollegiate athletic programs of Rutgers University-Newark in August 2008.  Responsible for the organization and administration of the delivery of athletic medicine, Fanning works under the direction of the Team Physician in the supervised medical model in providing health care services to the student-athlete population. 

Dedicated to providing a safe and inclusive environment to assist in the growth and development of the student-athlete, Brian continues to pursue advances in the delivery of athletic training and remains active in clinical research.  As a preceptor for the Seton Hall University Graduate Master of Science Athletic Training Degree Program since 2005, Brian continues to assist in the development and advancement of clinical education in the careers of future health care clinicians.  

Fanning holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Movement and Sports Science/Athletic Training from Sacred Heart University (the inaugural accredited class of 2002) and a Master of Science degree in Athletic Training from California University of Pennsylvania (class of 2004) now known as Pennsylvania Western University, California.  Formerly the Assistant Athletic Trainer at Fairleigh Dickinson University – College at Florham from 2004-2008, Brian continues to hold membership to the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and Athletic Trainers’ Association of New Jersey since 2003. 

Outside of work, you can find Brian on the golf course where he continues to test the limits of the turf management staff, examines the depths of aquatic landscapes, and surveys the consistency of sand particles while generously donating golf balls to those able to properly identify poison ivy.
