JERSEY CITY, NJ – Junior forward Jess Sapienza (Fanwood, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood HS) netted a goal in each half and sophomore midfielder Tanya Groszew (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) added an assist and the game-winning goal as Rutgers-Newark downed New Jersey City, 3-1, on McNulty Field at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex in a New Jersey Athletic Conference women's soccer match.

Senior goalkeeper Katie Hastings (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) kept the Raiders close with five saves in the opening half, allowing only a point-blank shot to Jennifer Albuja in the 41st minute, as NJCU out shot Rutgers-Newark, 13-5, in the period. Hastings finished the day with seven saves.
Rutgers-Newark seized control of the match in the second half.
Sapienza, who put away a shot from the left side on a cross by Groszew in the 12th minute to open the scoring, added an insurance goal in the 61st minute on a feed from sophomore Whitney Huber (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls).
Groszew netted what proved to be the game-winner by curling in a corner kick from the right side.
Rutgers-Newark (4-9-1, NJAC 1-4-1) host Rowan at 7 p.m. on Saturday on Alumni Field in another NJAC contest.
