Scarlet Raiders Settle For Tie At Rutgers-Camden

Rutgers-Newark 1, Rutgers-Camden 1 (2 OT)

Senior midfielder Alison Phillips

CAMDEN, NJ – Senior midfielder Alison Phillips (Buena, NJ/Buena Regional HS) had the Rutgers-Newark goal and senior goalkeeper Katie Hastings (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) made four saves, but a second-half penalty kick gave Rutgers-Camden a 1-1, double overtime tie in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match.

NCAA BOX SCORE

Sophomore midfielder Tanya Groszew (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) almost made the Raiders a winner just before the final horn in the second overtime, launching a shot that Raptor keeper Kristen Cargen snared to preserve the tie. Cargen finished with seven saves.

Phillips headed in a perfect corner kick from Groszew in the 28th minute and the Raider made it stand up until the 76th minute.

A handball in the box gave Rutgers-Camden freshman Vanessa Maia (Union, NJ/Union) the penalty kick try, and she made it to give the Raptors (2-1-3) their third tie in a row.

Rutgers-Newark (3-2-1) out shot the Raptors, 15-12, and held a 7-6 edge in corner kicks.

It was the first tie in the series for the Raiders after seven straight losses to their sister institution. Rutgers-Newark began its women's soccer program in 2000.

The Raiders have to bounce back in a hurry with Juniata coming to Alumni Field for a 1 o'clock non-conference match on Sunday.
