Ramapo Shuts Out Scarlet Raiders

MAHWAH, NJ – Ramapo got a pair of early goals, then held on for a 2-0 New Jersey Athletic Conference women's soccer victory over Rutgers-Newark after an emergency pre-game goalkeeper switch by the Scarlet Raiders.

Sophomore Sam Weer (Willingboro, NJ/Life Center Academy), who was ready for her first NJAC start, suffered a knee injury while warming up just prior to match time. Weer went to the emergency room for some stitches, so senior goalkeeper Katie Hastings (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) was rushed into the lineup.

The Roadrunners (6-4-0, NJAC 2-1-0) got a goal just three minutes into the match from Chrissy Giordano. Melissa Demko added an insurance tally on an assist from Giordano in the 13th minute, and the Roadrunners controlled play at midfield for a shutout victory.

Hastings (0-5-1) stopped eight shots as Ramapo out shot the visitors, 19-5. Roadrunner goalkeeper Jessica DaRold stopped all five Rutgers-Newark shots.

Junior forward Jess Sapienza (Fanwood, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) and sophomore midfielder Tanya Groszew (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) each had two shots on goal for Rutgers-Newark.

Weer (3-0-0), who finished the contest on the sidelines with a bandage on her knee, entered the contest with no goals allowed in 214 minutes in goal.

It was the third straight loss for the Raiders who have not won in their last five matches to fall to 3-5-1 on the season. Their NJAC mark slipped to 0-2-1.

Rutgers-Newark hosts Montclair State on Alumni Field at 7 o'clock on Wednesday in another NJAC contest.
