Kean Muscles Past Scarlet Raiders

UNION, NJ – Senior forward Eni Fageyinbo paced Rutgers-Newark with a dozen points and six rebounds, but league-leading Kean overwhelmed the Scarlet Raiders, 81-49, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game in the Harwood Arena.

The Scarlet Raiders host New Jersey City in an NJAC doubleheader in The Golden Dome on Wednesday with the Rutgers-Newark women (17-5, NJAC 6-4) trying to lock up their fourth straight berth in the NJAC Championship Tournament.  The Gothic Knights (8-14, NJAC 3-7) downed Rutgers-Camden, 58-55, today to stay alive in the conference tournament race with just three games left on the schedule. The women will tip off at 5:30 p.m. with the men to follow at 7:30 on Wednesday.

A Fageyinbo jumper knotted the score for the second and final time at 11-11 with less than five minutes gone in the game before the Cougars (21-1, NJAC 9-1) out-scored the Scarlet Raiders, 35-9, for the remainder of the period to take total control of the contest.

Senior guard Nerlande Nicolas added eight points, six rebounds and a team-high four assists while seniors Sabrina Sanchez and Stephanie Ross added six points apiece for Rutgers-Newark. Ross added five rebounds and two blocked shots.

Long-range shooting specialist Melissa Beyruti netted 17 of her game high 20 points in the opening half, hitting just two of six from beyond the arc. Junior guard Ebony Jackson netted 10 of her 15 points and dished off three of her game-high eight assisting in the first 20 minutes. Jackson also had a game-high four steals. Freshman forward Tiffany Patrick tallied 10 points and six rebounds while senior center Chari' Cooper finished with eight points and eight rebounds as Kean controlled the glass, 43-34.

The Cougars posted their 16th consecutive win by scoring 35 points off of 28 Scarlet Raider turnovers.
