WAYNE, NJ – Rutgers-Newark put a scare into heavily-favored William Paterson in game one, but William Paterson rallied to sweep a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader, 5-4 and 12-2, on Pioneer Field.

NCAA Statistics:   WPU 5, R-N 4   WPU 12, R-N 2

Sophomore centerfielder Elena Morge hammered a two-run homer in the top of the fifth to ignite a three-run rally which gave the Scarlet Raiders (3-15, NJAC 0-2) a 4-3 lead in the opener, but the Pioneers pushed across one run in the sixth and one in the seventh to derail Rutgers-Newark's upset bid.

Freshman leftfielder Jessica Zelaya went three for four and freshman third baseman Ashley Angeli went two for four with an RBI single to cap the fifth-inning Raider rally.

Junior Carrie McGuire (0-5) took the loss, giving up 10 hits while striking out three and walking one.

In game two, the Raiders managed just four hits. Zelaya walked and scored on a single by senior shortstop Charlotte Labate in the first. Senior second baseman Shauna Gallagher singled and scored on a single by McGuire, who played first base in the nightcap, in the third.

Losing pitcher Jess Murray (1-5) ripped a one-out double to left center field in the fourth for the other Raider hit.

Rutgers-Newark hosts Montclair State in its home opener on Tuesday at 3 p.m. in an NJAC doubleheader on Alumni Field.
