Gothic Knight pitchers junior Andrea Delucrezia (4-9) and sophomore Lacey Skowronski (7-4) yielded just eight hits in the twinbill to out dual counterparts Carrie McGuire (1-10) and Jess Murray (1-11), respectively. Both McGuire and Murray were hard-luck losers, each giving up just seven hits.
In the opener, McGuire struck out two and walked three while Delucrezia gave up just five hits.
Senior second baseman Shauna Gallagher stroked a one-out double, stole third and scored on an infield hit by Labate for the Raiders' only run in the first inning. But Gallagher's was the only extra-base hit in the contest for Rutgers-Newark.
Back-to-back two-out singles by freshman third baseman Ashley Angeli and freshman centerfielder Jessica Zelaya in the second were the final hits against Delucrezia who then retired 14 batters in a row before giving up a one-out walk in the seventh.
In the nightcap, Skowronski struck out five and walked no one, allowing singles to Labate in the fifth, Murray in the sixth and McGuire in the seventh. She had a perfect game going until Labate's lead-off single to centerfield.
The Scarlet Raiders (4-26, NJAC 0-10) will be at Ramapo on Tuesday at 3 p.m. for an NJAC twinbill. NJCU improved to 13-13 overall and 4-6 in conference play while sweep the Raiders for the second straight season.
