Kean 4, Rutgers-Newark 0

Senior leftfielder Doug Ford

UNION, NJ – Kean junior righthander Colin Feneis shut down Rutgers-Newark with a complete-game shutout, 4-0, in Jim Hynes Stadium as the Scarlet Raiders now face a do-or-die Saturday to end their regular season.

NCAA Statistics

The Scarlet Raiders (18-17-1, NJAC 7-9) are tied with Richard Stockton (20-13, NJAC 7-9) for the sixth and final slot in next week's New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship Tournament. Rutgers-Newark hosts Ramapo in Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium while Richard Stockton hosts William Paterson in a pair of noon NJAC doubleheaders tomorrow which could directly determine the last team to gain a tournament berth.

Feneis (2-3) posted his first complete-game of the season, scattering eight hits while striking out seven and walking no one to get the win over Raider junior lefthander Kevin Matawa. Matawa (4-4) gave up just five hits in six and a third innings, striking out four but walking five.

The Cougars pushed across three runs in the first two innings before Matawa settled in to blank Kean (28-9, NJAC 12-4) over four straight frames. He was pulled in the seventh after a single and two walks loaded the bases for Kean. Freshman Ryan Williams closed out the game for the Raiders, yielding two hits while striking out one.

Senior leftfielder Doug Ford and freshman centerfielder Matt Citro led the Raiders' attack with two hits apiece, but Feneis allowed no extra-base hits to post only the second shutout of Rutgers-Newark this season.

Tomorrow will also be Senior Day as Raiders Ford, Dan Zika and Thanos Iglesius will be honored during pre-game ceremonies.
