Biography

SENIOR (2009): Led staff in innings pitched for second straight season (52-1/3) while posting a 2-2 record with a 5.85 ERA in nine starts… Raiders were 6-4 in games in which he appeared… had 18 strikeouts against 13 walks… hurled a complete-game, 5-1 win over New Jersey City (4/24), scattering five hits, striking out three and walking just one in nine full innings… got win over Redlands (3/22) by going 7-2/3 innings in a 13-5 decision… struck out four and yielded no hits, no walks and no runs in three full innings of his only relief appearance of the season in a 4-2 victory over Baruch (4/30)… pitched seven innings, but did not get the decision, in a 7-6 win over Kean (3/27).

JUNIOR (2008): The workhorse of the Raider staff after battling back from a two-year absence following Tommy John surgery… never missed a start, leading the team with 10 starts and 54-2/3 innings… registered a 4-4 record with a 6.59 ERA…posted a complete-game, nine-inning, 3-2 win over Franklin & Marshall (4/19), scattering six hits while striking out two and walking one… worked the first six innings of a 7-4 win over Stevens (3/9), striking out two and walking no one while yielding 11 hits and three runs… got the win against FDU-Florham (3/25), striking out two and walking no one while giving up seven hits and one run… went seven innings, scattering nine hits and striking out one while giving up a walk and four runs in a 15-4 win over Richard Stockton (4/13)… hurled the first seven innings of R-N’s marathon, 17-inning, 8-6 win over Rutgers-Camden (4/5), striking out four and walking one while yielding 10 hits and three earned runs.

2007: Sat out following Tommy John surgery.

2006: Medical hardship season due to elbow injury suffered in the early season… had an 0-2 record with a 9.39 ERA in three appearances before the injury forced him to the sidelines… hurled 15-1/3 innings, striking out 12 and walking six.

SOPHOMORE (2005): Started nine games and went 3-4 with a 3.48 ERA… yielded 57 hits in 54-1/3 innings... struck out 21 and walked 26… ended regular season with a stellar complete-game 6-hitter over nationally-ranked The College of New Jersey… was 1-1 with a 2.89 ERA in NJAC games.

FRESHMAN (2004): Appeared in 10 games and pitched 25 1/3 innings… earned his first collegiate win against New Jersey City (4/17) when he pitched three scoreless innings of relief… shut down Pacific Lutheran in California allowing just five hits in seven innings of relief… made his first collegiate start against perennial national power York (PA) College and allowed just six hits and four earned runs in 5-2/3 innings… named NJAC Rookie of the Week in March.

HIGH SCHOOL: Four-year letterwinner… was 7-1 with a 1.14 ERA as a senior…struck out 66 and walked 27 in 61-2/3 innings… led team to a 13-10 record and a second-round appearance in the State Tournament… named all-league and All-North Jersey Group 1… coaches award winner his junior year and was named team’s MVP in his senior campaign… was an all-county bowler his senior year.

PERSONAL: Son of Jerry and Kathy Matawa… psychology major.
