Balanced NJCU Downs Rutgers-Newark In NJAC Opener

NEWARK, NJ – Freshman outside hitter Toni Moppert (Woodcliff Lake, NJ/Pascack Hills) and sophomore middle blocker Crystal Navarro (Passaic, NJ/Passaic) had four kills each for the Scarlet Raiders, but New Jersey City earned a 3-0 win in the New Jersey Athletic Conference opener for each squad. Game scores were 25-10, 25-11, 25-15.

NCAA Statistics

Junior Jennifer Hatch and seniors Sarah Torres and Jennifer Carvalho combined for 28 kills to pace New Jersey City.  Hatch had 10 kills while Carvalho and Torres notched nine apiece as the Gothic Knights (3-4, NJAC 1-0) out-hit the Scarlet Raiders (0-12, NJAC 0-1), .342 to .036.

 Moppert tied junior libero Val Dauti (West Orange, NJ/West Orange) with a match-high nine digs.  Junior setter Christina Francisco (West Orange, NJ/West Orange) had 10 assists and six digs for Rutgers-Newark.

Sophomore setter Alex Johanesen posted 30 assists and five digs for NJCU. Carvalho and Johanesen each delivered three aces to provide the lion's share of the Gothic Knights' 11 on the night. 

It was the home opener for he Scarlet Raiders who host Hunter in The Golden Dome on Friday at 7 p.m.
