Rookies Sparkle In Tough Defeat To Favored Baruch

NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark freshmen Stephanie Touzan and Rachel Witt each posted career highs in kills, combining for 21 putaways, but Baruch left The Golden Dome Rec Gym with a 3-1 non-conference women's volleyball victory. Set scores were 25-11, 25-19, 23-25, 25-17.

The Scarlet Raiders (0-20) put forth one of their best efforts of the year against the heavily-favored Bearcats (12-4), hitting a solid .329 behind the setting of junior Gabi Mangieri who notched a career-high 26 assists.

Touzan hammered down 11 kills with just one error on 16 swings – hitting a scorching .625. Witt had 10 kills with four errors on 24 attacks to hit a solid .250. Each rookie had three service aces and an assisted block.

Senior libero Val Dauti contributed a match-high eight digs and three aces while sophomore outside hitter Toni Moppert had a strong all-around performance. She hit .455 with six kills and one error on just 11 swings, delivered three aces and made five digs.

Junior Na-Keta Michael added a spark off the bench with three kills on just five attacks with one error.

But the experienced Baruch squad got 16 kills from junior middle blocker Christina Pierre to highlight a .434 hitting percentage by the visitors. The Bearcats notched 19 aces and freshman setter Melinda Santiago piled up 33 assists.

Rutgers-Newark hosts The College of Staten Island on Saturday at 1 p.m. in The Golden Dome Rec Gym on “Dig Pink” Day to raise awareness and funds in the fight against breast cancer. The Raiders will be wearing pink jerseys for the non-conference match.
