NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark sophomore goalkeeper Kat Renteria notched five saves and the Scarlet Raiders rallied for two goals in a 2-1 upset of heavily-favored Richard Stockton on Alumni Field.

Rutgers-Newark 2, Richard Stockton 1

It marked the first Rutgers-Newark victory in the 10-year history of the series.  Stockton posted an 0-9-0 mark against the Raiders coming into tonight's fray.

The Ospreys (8-3-1, NJAC 3-2-0) took a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute when freshman forward Kiera Hines collected a loose ball during a scramble in front of the net and rolled a goal into the unguarded left side.

But header goals by senior Sasha Potter in the 63rd minute and freshman Margeaux Hedley in the 72nd shocked the Ospreys.

Potter headed a corner kick by senior midfielder Whitney Huber from the left side through a maze of Osprey defenders into the middle of the net to level the score.

Sophomore forward Liana Abreu lobbed a restart kick from 30 yards out on the right side into the left side of the box where Hedley sprinted past the defense and headed the ball inside the right post for the game winner. It was Hedley's first career tally.

Renteria's play between the pipes spelled the difference as Richard Stockton outshot the Raider, 22-7. The Ospreys also forged a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.  Osprey freshman goalkeeper Brittany Boyle made one first-half save.

Defenders Jessica Gavilanes, Angela Neves and Potter each came up with solid defensive efforts to help the Raiders post their first NJAC victory of the season.

Rutgers-Newark visits Albright for a women's and men's doubledheader on Wednesday.  The Raider women play Albright 4 p.m. before the men's teams square off at 6:30.
