NEWARK, N.J. – The Rutgers-Newark women's soccer team battled Ramapo College to a 0-0 draw Wednesday evening at Frederick Douglass Field in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action.
The Scarlet Raiders generated six shots, putting two on target, while holding the Roadrunners to nine shots and four on goal. Graduate goalkeeper Maura Chawner anchored the Rutgers-Newark defense, recording four saves to earn the shutout.
Rutgers-Newark created opportunities throughout the contest, with Genesis Sarango testing Ramapo goalkeeper Gabby Matias in the first half. The Scarlet Raiders continued to push after the break, as Dana Nunez put a shot on target in the 54th minute, but Matias came up with the save.
Chawner and the Scarlet Raiders' back line remained composed under pressure in the second half, turning away Ramapo's attempts to find a breakthrough. Chawner made three saves after halftime, including stops on shots from Sofia Cascio, Amber Maher and Marisa Christ, to preserve the shutout.
Both teams held firm defensively through the final whistle, leaving the match deadlocked at 0-0.
Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Friday, Oct. 23, when the Scarlet Raiders travel to face #4 Rowan at Frederick Douglass Field.
