Ramapo Edges Raiders In Second Half

MAHWAH, NJ – Rutgers-Newark junior forward Deshawn Singleton (Passaic, NJ/Passaic HS) had team highs of 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists, but Ramapo dealt the Scarlet Raiders a 78-72 New Jersey Athletic Conference setback in the Bradley Center.

The Scarlet Raiders (12-10, NJAC 5-5) fell for the third straight time in NJAC play while the Roadrunners (13-8, NJAC 6-4) avenged an early-season 82-80 loss in Newark and moved a game ahead of Rutgers-Newark into third place in the league's North Division. The top three teams in each of the NJAC's two divisions gain berths in the championship tournament.

Junior guard James Johnson (Summit, NJ/Summit) made three of seven shots from beyond the arc to finish with 13 points while freshman reserve guard Greg Moore (Jersey City, NJ/Bayonne) made three of six from 3-point range on his way to 11 points. Moore also added two assists and two steals in just 17 minutes of play.

Junior forward Phil Barnes (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) made five of seven shots from the floor to chip in 10 points while junior point guard Tim Smith (Mullica Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) notched eight points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals for the Raiders.

The Roadrunners throttled high-scoring forward David Cherry (Linden, NJ/Roselle Catholic), limiting the 6-foot-6 senior to three points on by allowing him just three shots from the field and a pair of free throws.

Ramapo made 19 of 34 shots from the foul line which became a decisive factor. The Raiders made 10 of just 15 free throws and were out rebounded, 44-24.

Junior Ander Kenny netted 24 points while senior Tim Wesley notched 22 points for Ramapo. Wesley also hauled down a game-high 12 rebounds. Kevin Findlay added 15 points and eight rebounds for the Roadrunners.

Behind eight points apiece by Singleton and Moore, the Raiders scratched out a 33-31 halftime edge with Rutgers-Newark making nine of 12 free throws in the period.

A Singleton jumper gave Rutgers-Newark a 38-33 lead with 17:37 left before Wesley had eight points and Kenny, four, during a 12-2 run which staked the Roadrunners to a 45-40 lead with 14:30 remaining.

The Raiders twice cut the lead to two, but Ramapo held off the charges and eventually pushed the lead to 71-62 on a jumper by Findlay with 1:19 left.

Rutgers-Newark shot a solid 49.1% (28-57) from the floor, but Ramapo made 52.8% (28-53) of its tries to make the free throw line the deciding factor.
