PATCHOGUE, NY --Senior midfielder Whitney Huber knotted the score at 1-1 on an assist from sophomore Stefani Uthman in the 73rd minute, but Rutgers-Newark fell to St. Joseph's on a late goal in its season opener.

Huber's shot from the top of the box evened things after neither team could find the back of the net for nearly 68 minutes.  R-N sophomore goalkeeper Kat Renteria gave up a goal in just the fifth minute to the Golden Eagles' Maureen Nolan on a cross from Angie Merante.  Renteria finished with five saves.

Merante caught Renteria out of the box for the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute.

St. Joseph's goalkeeper Dana Carney made eight saves as the Raiders put nine of their 11 shots on goal.  Each team took 11 shots with the R-N holding a narrow 5-4 edge in corner kicks.

Rutgers-Newark (0-1) faces Ferrum College in the opening round of the Bridgewater (VA) Invitational on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
