NJAC-Leading WPU Downs Scarlet Raiders, 3-0

Rutgers-Newark Women's Soccer

Kat Renteria
NEWARK, NJ – Junior goalkeeper Kat Renteria made several spectacular stops among her nine saves, but William Paterson posted a 3-0 New Jersey Athletic Conference win on Alumni Field to spoil Senior Night.

BOX SCORE & PLAY-BY-PLAY

The Scarlet Raiders (6-9-3, NJAC 2-4-2) stayed alive in the race for one of six NJAC Championship Tournament slots because of losses by Kean (8-5-4, NJAC 2-3-3) and New Jersey City (12-6-0, NJAC 3-5-0). A Rutgers-Newark upset win at Richard Stockton (10-6-2, NJAC 4-3-1) on Wednesday coupled with non-wins by Kean and New Jersey City in their regular season final matches would boost the Raiders into the first conference playoff berth in program history. New Jersey City plays at cellar-dwelling Rutgers-Camden while Kean is at WPU on Wednesday.

William Paterson sophomore forward Michelle Marabondo had a hand in all three goals as the Pioneers (11-2-4, NJAC 7-0-1) maintained their half-game lead over The College of New Jersey (13-2-1, NJAC 7-1-0) and Rowan (14-1-1, NJAC 7-1-0).

Marabondo scored a goal after picking up a loose ball in the 38th minute before running through defenders off of a through pass by junior back Ashley Grabowski to tally her 13th marker of the season in the 55th minute to stake the Pioneers to a 2-0 edge. Marabondo then sent a cross from near the right side goal line into the middle of the box for an easy putaway by sophomore forward Sophie Hart-Ruderman in the 64th minute.

WPU freshman goalkeeper Alyssa Falduto got a free shutout victory – her eighth of the season – as the Pioneer defense allowed no shots on goal. WPU out-shot Rutgers-Newark, 28-10, and managed a 7-6 edge in corner kicks.

Raider four-year letterwinners Karen Johnson and Angela Neves took their final bows on Alumni Field prior to the match.
