Goalkeepers Sparkle As Raiders And Lions Tie, 1-1

NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark battled to a 1-1 double-overtime tie with Albright College as goalkeepers Kat Renteria for the Scarlet Raiders and Olivia Giuliano for the Lions turned in superlative performances on Alumni Field.

Renteria, a junior, turned back seven shots while Giuliano, also a junior, made 15 saves as the teams struggled through 110 minutes.

Neither team scored in the first half as Giuliano made eight saves and Renteria, four, to extend the stalemate into the 54th minute.

Raider junior midfielder Liana Abreu got the first tally, running onto a shot off of Giuliano by freshman midfielder Alex Nata in the right side of the box and punching in a shot with 53:41 gone.

It took the Lions (1-2-2) just over five minutes to level the score as sophomore forward Jordan Cassidy dribbled on a breakaway all the way to the left side of the goal to draw out Renteria before toeing a short grounder to the middle where junior midfielder Katie Cooper as all alone for the putaway.

Renteria turned back one shot in the first overtime before Giuliano made three saves in the second extra frame make the match a push.

Rutgers-Newark opens its New Jersey Athletic Conference slate on Saturday, hosting Rutgers-Camden at 7 p.m. on Alumni Field.
