Raiders, Raptors Battle To 1-1 Stalemate In NJAC Opener

Rutgers-Newark Women's Soccer

Liana Abreu
NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark and Rutgers-Camden battled to a 1-1 stalemate in their New Jersey Athletic Conference opener on Alumni Field.

BOX SCORE & PLAY-BY-PLAY

The Scarlet Raiders (3-3-2, NJAC 0-0-1), who out-shot the visitors, 19-13, put 11 shots on goal, but solid defensive play by the Scarlet Raptors (1-4-1, NJAC 0-0-1) kept things level in the 110-minute battle.

Raider junior midfielder Liana Abreu leveled the score in the 48th minute by dribbling the ball from the left side into the middle of the 18 before firing a hard shot inside the right post.

Junior forward Samantha Sharp dribbled the ball along the right endline to draw in Raider junior goalkeeper Kat Renteria before striking a clean cross to senior midfielder Vanessa Maia who was alone in the left side of the box for an easy putaway in the 23rd minute.

Raptor starting goalkeeper Kelly Harper stopped three shots and her defensive teammates turned away two other Rutgers-Newark shots on goal in the opening period to send the Raptors into the break with a 1-0 lead.

But, that was all of the scoring as the goalkeepers dominated the rest of the night.

Renteria finished with five saves including one in each overtime period.

Raptor freshman Leighanna Milby faced nine second-half shots by the Raiders, making five saves against the lone Rutgers-Newark tally. She gave way to Harper at the start of the second overtime, but neither Rutgers-Camden keeper faced a shot in the extra 20 minutes.

Rutgers-Newark, which settled for its second straight tie, is at Kean University at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday for another NJAC contest.
